History of Curriculum Development in the Greater St. Louis Community – Preserving Equitable Education for All

Description:
Our Issues Exploration team has put together this program to explore how curriculum is developed in Missouri public schools, what equitable education means and how curriculum development has a history of being controversial. They will discuss why this has become a particularly polarizing topic today and how supporters of public education can help foster safe supportive dialogue. The panel will include Dr. Rob Good, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Education and History, UMSL, and Heather Fleming, Founder of In Purpose Educational Services and Missouri Equity Education Partnership.

Dr. Good is a retired high school social studies teacher (Ladue High School) and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Education and History at the University of Missouri—  St. Louis.  In his 27-year career as a high school teacher, Rob focused on issues of equity and inclusion in both the curriculum and the policies and practices of his school community. Rob has a bachelor’s degree in history from Westminster College, a master’s degree in history from Ohio University and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Missouri — St. Louis.  Rob was named the Tachau Teacher of the Year by the Organization of American Historians in 2012, a Peabody Leader in Education in 2015 and the Missouri History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute in 2016.

Ms. Heather Fleming is a diversity and inclusion educator, former English teacher and author of My Black Friend Says…: Lessons in Equity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competency.
